From the bundled IBAN format registry. This example is for explaining the layout, never for making a payment.
How is the DE format put together?
Start with DE, then two international check digits and a 18-character basic bank account number (BBAN). Its character pattern is 8 digits + 10 digits. Spaces help readability but do not count toward the 22-character length.
Registry notation: 8!n10!n. Here, n means digits, a means letters and c means letters or digits. The number before ! is the exact field length.
What does Genory check for this format?
The generator reports country, length, BBAN pattern and MOD-97 checks with each result. Additional national and bank checks depend on the available rules and references. Read the result’s validation details: an unavailable check is not a passed check.
The colored blocks explain positions only. They do not confirm that a bank code is current or that an account exists.
How can I test a form that accepts DE IBANs?
Start with a valid-format sample, then use “Test scenarios and reproducible results” to create a wrong checksum, wrong length or invalid character. “Validate results” compares the expected outcome with Genory’s checks. Test values with and without display spaces according to your form’s requirements.
Keep values as text to preserve leading zeros. For payment-provider integration tests, use that provider’s designated sandbox values.
Test the format. Understand the limit.
Use IBAN samples to exercise input formatting, country rules and checksum handling in a controlled test environment. An IBAN that passes a format check does not prove that an account exists, belongs to anyone or can receive a payment. Keep those questions separate throughout your test.
- 01
Choose a country and mode
Synthetic mode creates format samples. Published examples, where available, are useful for repeatable checks. They are not payment instructions.
- 02
Read the validation details
Inspect country, length, BBAN structure and MOD-97 results. Additional national checks depend on available rules; read any coverage warning.
- 03
Test one change at a time
Keep a valid fixture, then derive cases with a missing character or an incorrect check digit. Assert the reported reason instead of treating every failure as the same error.
| Check | What it tells you | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Country and length | The structure matches a supported country | Whether an account was issued |
| BBAN and MOD-97 | The shape and checksum are consistent | Ownership or account balance |
| Additional national rules | Implemented national checks passed | Rules not covered by the available data |
| Bank reference information | A match in the bundled references | Current payment acceptance |
Before you use the result
Practical answers for your next test.
Why does a sample pass MOD-97 but still show a warning?
The international checksum and additional national rules are separate. Some bank-specific checks are unavailable; the result explains that gap.
Can I select a bank?
Supported bank selection is available with active Pro or Developer access. Country coverage varies; Free uses automatic selection.
Should I store an IBAN as a number?
No. It contains letters and meaningful leading zeros. Store the complete normalized value as text and format spaces for display separately.
